Historic homes and castles, industrial archaeology, museums, plant nurseries, the pottery at Bardon Mill, country walks, cycling, horse riding, salmon and trout fishing, golf, the seaside and so many things are within reach. Information leaflets are available in the cottage as well as several guide and walking books that you are welcome to use during your stay. Suggested highlights for your visit are The Roman Army and Vindolanda museums, both detailing the incredible history of Hadrian’s Wall and surrounding areas, both within 10 minutes drive, as well as the Roman fort at Housesteads and the famous Sycamore gap. Historic Hexham is the nearest town, 11 miles to the East along the A69 and served hourly by a public bus service, 685, or several times a day by train. Newcastle, our nearest metropolis, is renowned for its architecture, character and shops, not to forget the nightlife!. Buses and trains run regularly to both the Metro Centre and Newcastle city centre, driving time is approximately 35 mins. In the opposite direction is Carlisle and its Cathedral and Castle as well as a fantastic shopping area. In Bardon Mill itself we have the Bowes Hotel, just 100m from Montcoffer, a typical village pub with a lounge and games room. Great food, at very reasonable prices, is available at The Bowes and Tommy the Landlord would be happy to have you visit. There are also several other pubs a short drive away and a ‘gastropub’ in Haydon Bridge. 5 mins from Montcoffer is the South Tyne River with a foot bridge just the other side of the railway line. Once over the river there is a riverside walk or a popular 3m round trip walk to Beltingham with its ancient Church of Bowes Lyon family. Further on still is the National Trust, Allen Banks where there are several circular walks alongside and above the River Allen, a must during your stay. Whatever you choose to do we are sure you will love all that the South Tyne and Northumberland have to offer. |
