Attractions and Activities in Hadrian's Wall Country
Hadrians Wall - Crag Lough Montcoffer is ideally situated for exploring the most interesting and scenic Hadrians Wall sites, such as Vindolanda and Housesteads, for your holidays or breaks in Northumberland.

As well as sightseeing, activities in the region include salmon fishing, rambling, bird watching, horse riding, motor cycling, canoeing and golfing. The area is also good for fungal forays.
  • Hadrian's Wall - With Montcoffer being so close to the Roman sites of Vindolanda and Housesteads and just 10 minutes drive from Highshield Crags, the most scenic part of Hadrian's Wall, history is all around you.

  • Fishing - We are within 5 minutes walking distance of the River Tyne (the best salmon and sea trout river in England) and a favourite haunt of otters.Day tickets can be arranged for lake and river fishing in the most scenic locations.
  • Hexham Abbey, Hexham, Northumberland © Graeme Peacock Walking - Walking the Roman Wall is the long distance (81 mile) challenge that some of our fitter residents embark on. This will be made easier by 2002 when the Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail is finally fully opened.
Of course there are many shorter, perhaps appetite-stimulating, walks from our front door. Popular with our guests is the 3 mile round trip across the South Tyne to the ancient Church of the Bowes Lyon family at Beltingham where the "bravest man in England" Bishop Nicholas Ridley may have once ministered. Also nearby is the well known Ridley Hall to Plankey Mill walk.
A little further afield, but still within walking distance, is the beautiful National Trust wooded valley at Allenbanks.

  • Bird watching - Just look out of our windows or wander down the garden to the Beech trees by the river to see a wide range of bird life. Whether it's upland, river or woodland, birds of all species flourish in the unspoilt Northumbrian countryside.
  • Play Golf at Slaley Hall, nr Hexham, Northumberland © Graeme Peacock Cycling - There are many opportunities for mountain biking or more sedate cycling on quiet rural roads. For the long distance cyclist we are about midway on the Coast to Coast cycle (C2C) route. An ideal first nights stop?
  • Motor Cycling - We are motor bike friendly and empathise with those who recognise that Northumberland has the most glorious roads for biking.
  • Horse Riding - The local stables, close to Vindolanda, are only a mile away. We can arrange classes or short treks for all ages and abilities.
  • Golf - Our nearest course at Haltwhistle offers special weekly discounts for Montcoffer guests. There are also courses at Hexham and the International standard course designed by Peter Allis at Slaley.
  • Swimming - There are three indoor or outdoor heated pools just a short drive from Montcoffer.
  • Tyne Green & River Tyne, Hexham, Northumberland © Graeme Peacock Canoeing - The English Championships are regularly held on the South River Tyne (our nearest river). The river provides both rapid and still water opportunities for the keen canoeist.
  • Sightseeing - We have a good knowledge of the area and can provide maps and advise on trips out. We can also arrange personal guided tours to Hadrian's wall and related sites.
  • Fungal Forays - John is interested in mushrooms, toadstools and other fungi and in the Autumn offers guests the opportunity to join him on his fungal forays!
  • Plants for sale, art displays and garden walks are at The Garden Station where you can also enjoy art and gardening courses.
  • Explore the village - enjoy peacefull walks around Bardon Mill.
